Doxycycline - Antibiotic against bacterial STIsFollowing a recent review by our clinical team, our doctors do not consider it appropriate to supply this treatment via an online consultation only. If you are seeking this or similar medication, we advise you to make an appointment with your regular doctor who can properly assess your suitability for treatment.
Doxycycline is a versatile tetracycline antibiotic widely used to treat various bacteriabourne infections. It can also be prescribed to prevent malaria. The semi-synthetic chemical was first developed by US pharmaceutical Pfizer in the Sixties and subsequently marketed under the brand name Vibramycin. Nowadays, the medication is widely available under a variety of brand names as well as its generic drug name. Doxycycline inhibits the reproduction and growth of bacteria which limits the spread of an infection allowing the immune system to destroy the remaining bacteria. It is a broad spectrum antibiotic and can be used to cure a number of conditions, however some bacteria strains have developed resistance to doxycycline. If doxycycline does not help clear up infection speak to your doctor so another course of antibiotics can be prescribed. Doxycycline 100mg is taken orally twice a day over a course of seven days to treat bacterial STIs (sexually transmitted infections) such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea, non-specific urethritis or mycoplasma genitalium. We also offer a chlamydia treatment that is taken as a single dose. Potential side-effectsBroad spectrum antibiotics can sometimes cause an inflammation of the bowel which may manifest itself in persistent diarrhoea or bloody stools. If you experience these symptoms, please consult your doctor immediately. The medicine can also increasse the skin’s photosensitivity, so refrain from using sunbeds during treatment and apply sunscreen with a high SPF both at home and abroad. Unsuitable patientsYou should not take doxycycline if:
