How does trimethoprim work?
Trimethoprim is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections.
Trimethoprim works by preventing bacteria from reproducing. This stops infection from spreading and allows the body’s own defences to fight off infection causing bacteria.
Trimethoprim is used to treatment a number of bladder and urinary tract infections, including one-off and recurrent episodes. It is the most effective antibiotic in treating Cystitis.
Further points for consideration
Unless otherwise instructed by your doctor, you must complete your course of antibiotics and take the tablets as advised. Stopping a course early increase the chance of infection coming back and could lead to bacterial resistance to the antibiotics prescribed.
If your symptoms do not clear up despite completing treatment contact your doctor for further advice.
