What is Crestor?

Crestor (rosuvastatin) is a statin, used to treat high cholesterol and to prevent cardiovascular disease. Crestor lowers LDL (bad) cholesterol (up to 52%) and raises HDL (good) cholesterol (up to 14%). It's also been proven to slow the progression of atherosclerosis.

Crestor works by blocking an enzyme in the liver, thus limiting cholesterol production and lowering the amount of total cholesterol that ends up in the bloodstream.

How well does Crestor work?

A large trial called 'the Jupiter Study' recently explored how Crestor might benefit people with cholesterol levels lower than are currently being prescribed statins.

The results of this study showed that Crestor reduced the relative risk of certain heart problems by 44%. It is important to note that while participants were 'lower risk' in terms of their cholesterol levels, they were still not 100% healthy. Everyone in this study had had high blood levels of a protein (called high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, or CRP) linked to cardiovascular problems.

In response to the findings of the study, Professor Peter Weissberg, Medical Director at the British Heart Foundation said:

"The findings raise questions about who should receive treatment to prevent a heart attack, how aggressively they should be treated and with which drug. These important issues have profound implications for future NICE guidelines."

What are the possible side effects of Crestor

As with all prescription medication, Crestor may cause side effects in some people. The most common include:

Headache
Muscle pain
Abdominal pain
Weakness
Nausea

If you develop any unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness at any time during treatment (especially if you also have a fever or feel ill), call your doctor right away, as these symptoms could be a sign of a rare but serious side effect.

Do not take Crestor if you

Have previously had an allergic reaction to Crestor
Currently have liver disease or liver problems
Are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, or are planning to become pregnant. Crestor may harm your unborn baby. If you become pregnant while taking Crestor, stop taking the medicine and call your doctor right away
Are breast feeding. Crestor can pass into your breast milk and may harm your baby
