Question: Can women take Viagra?

Answer:The debate on whether women can take Viagra has been long discussed ever since Samantha famously took a pill on an episode of Sex in the City. Whilst no doctor would prescribe Viagra to a female patient, generic versions of the blue pill have been purposely marketed towards female audiences, with many manufacturers opting to colour the pill pink in order to be more appealing to the fairer sex.

Extra Information Related to this Q&A
Clever marketing aside, the issue begs the question: can women actually derive any benefit from taking Viagra? Viagra treats a specific health problem, male erectile dysfunction, and even within the realms of erection related conditions the treatment’s action is quite specific. Erectile dysfunction is defined as the inability to either obtain or maintain an erection sufficient for penetration. The problem is chronic and affects around 40% of all men over the age of 40. Viagra works by blocking the enzymes in the body responsible for constricting blood vessels. These enzymes are found in particularly concentrated quantities in the penis so, in preventing vessel constriction, Viagra makes it easier for a man to gain an erection. Given the drug’s sheer action it is difficult to see how a woman could benefit from taking the drug, though some argue that in women Viagra can make the clitoris more sensitive thus heightening the pleasure derived from sex and increasing the possibility of reaching orgasm. It should also be noted that as the treatment is not licensed for use in women and therefore versions marketed for women are sold exclusively on the black market, there are no data to support claims about its efficacy in female patients. The final point to put forward is that pills like Viagra and co. are much more than harmless recreational drugs, they are medicines designed to treat health care issues. So, whilst there is no guarantee the drug will actually work if you take it girls, you will still put yourself at risk of its associated side effects.
